REVIEW – I have lived long enough to collect plenty of memories on formats that now feel ancient. As a Gen Xer, I have worked through VHS tapes, CDs, records, and boxes of prints, slowly moving them into digital files. Video and audio conversion became manageable over time, but photo scanning has always been the job I put off. Even with years as a digital artist, flatbed scanning feels slow, fussy, and rarely gives me a result that looks like the original print.

The Vivid-Pix Memory Station changed that workflow in a big way. It combines a Ricoh ScanSnap SV600 overhead scanner with Vivid-Pix RESTORE Imaging Software, so the process is built around quickly capturing and improving old photos rather than carefully lining up one print at a time. At $629.98, it is not an impulse buy for most homes. For schools, libraries, community centers, nursing homes, or anyone facing a huge family archive, though, the package makes a lot of sense.

What the Memory Station Is

The Memory Station is not a traditional flatbed scanner. The ScanSnap SV600 sits above the work surface and uses CCD optics with white LED illumination to photograph the scan area from overhead. That makes it useful for photos, paper documents, books, and magazines, including items that would be awkward to press against glass.

Vivid-Pix RESTORE is the other half of the bundle. The software handles scanning, cropping, color correction, and restoration tools intended for users who do not want to learn professional photo editing. The whole package is clearly aimed more at shared public spaces than at casual personal use, but the appeal is obvious if you have stacks of prints waiting to be digitized.

Hardware Tour

The ScanSnap SV600 uses a tall overhead design instead of a flatbed.

The ScanSnap SV600 is straightforward and utilitarian. At a basic level, it feels like a camera, lens, and light system mounted on a stand above the scan mat. Most of the working hardware is in the head at the top.

The gray and black ABS plastic head contains the CCD linear image sensor. The sensor uses an enhanced depth of field lens, which helps it stay focused across the scan area even though the material is not pressed flat under glass.

On each side of the sensor are powerful LED lamps behind thick round glass lenses. Those lenses help even out the illumination so the scanner is not as dependent on room lighting.

Setup and Software

Physical setup is easy. Put the scanner on the desk, connect the USB cable and power supply, lay out the mat, and place the acrylic sheet over photos when needed.

The software side takes more patience. Downloading, registering, and learning Vivid-Pix RESTORE is the least polished part of the experience. The interface feels like software from the 1990s, and it is not immediately intuitive. Once I understood where the controls lived, that old school layout did make the main options fairly easy to find.

Scanning Multiple Photos

For testing, I used old photos of myself from several eras. The scanner can claim to crop as many as ten photos at a time, but in my use five photos was the practical sweet spot. Leaving about an inch between prints helped the software identify boundaries and crop each image cleanly.

The first test was a childhood photo from around 1972. The print had yellowed, and the curled edges made it a good challenge for the scanner and software.

A preset correction improved the color and reduced some of the blur and age damage without requiring a long editing session.

The final version looked much better than the original scan. It was not the same level of restoration I could produce in Photoshop, but the speed made the compromise worthwhile.

More Restoration Tests

Next, I tried a photo from one of my rare athletic wins. It had yellowed with age and was softer than I wanted.

The result was not perfect, but for bulk scanning it was more than acceptable and took very little effort.

This one was harder. I could not find a preset that fully solved the issues.

The software still pushed the skin tone in a better direction and recovered some detail from the blown out areas. More granular manual controls would probably improve a difficult image like this.

For a military photo, I wanted to see how RESTORE handled blur, high contrast, and visible color defects.

The software used standard sharpening to clean up some blur and added a touch of saturation so the image had more impact.

The corrected version was clearly better, although the color defects remained. That is probably beyond what this kind of plug and play workflow is meant to fix.

The final photo came from my firefighting days and had deep shadows with very little visible detail.

For this image, I skipped the presets and adjusted it by hand to recover whatever detail and color I could.

The edit was not flawless, but it restored the blue of my jacket and brought back edges that had nearly disappeared.

Overall, the Memory Station is strongest when speed matters more than perfect restoration. It handled most common old photo problems with presets, and it still gave me manual controls for the tougher examples. I may be harder on the results than many users because of my digital imaging background, but I was impressed by how much work it removed from the scanning process.

What I Liked

What I Did Not Like

  • The RESTORE software is poorly designed and not very intuitive at first.
  • The system takes up a lot of desk space.
  • The price makes it better suited to commercial or institutional settings than most personal homes.

Final Thoughts

The Vivid-Pix Memory Station is a strong fit for schools, libraries, community centers, nursing homes, and other places where many people may need to digitize old photos or documents. For an individual buyer, the recommendation is more complicated. It works, and it becomes fairly easy to use after the learning curve, but the $629.98 price is steep when cheaper scanning options exist.

If you lack the patience or technical comfort to scan stacks of photos on a flatbed, the Memory Station can save a lot of time. The ability to handle books, magazines, and larger documents adds real value too. I would not call it the best choice for every home, but for the right setting it is a very useful tool.
