REVIEW – My cellphone takes a beating on a daily basis. It gets carried through the Seattle rain in my back pocket, slides around the cab of my truck, and often gets dropped on late-night walks with my pup. To guard against the unexpected I’ve engaged the SUPCASE Unicorn Beetle PRO Mag phone case. This two-piece rugged case for the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro has a built-in screen protector, port covers, a ring kickstand, magnets in the back and a belt holster in the box, all for $41.99. The Trackable MagFlip Wallet is the other half of my protection plan, a magnetic card wallet with a folding stand and a tracking chip that reports to Google Find Hub or Apple Find My, for $74.99. Together they turn my phone into a brick that holds my cards and tells me where they are at any time.

Note: The SUPCASE Unicorn Beetle PRO Mag and Trackable MagFlip Wallet were sent to me by SUPCASE at no cost. They had no editorial input and did not see this review before it published.

The Basics

SUPCASE calls its rugged line the Unicorn Beetle, and the PRO Mag is the version with magnets molded into the back, so magnetic chargers, mounts and wallets snap onto a phone that has no magnets of its own. The case is made of shock-absorbing TPU and hard polycarbonate. A front frame carries the screen protector and clicks onto a back shell that wraps the phone, and a separate holster clips the whole thing to a belt.

The MagFlip Wallet sticks to that magnetic back. It holds up to five cards and some folded cash, flips open into a stand, and has a tracking chip inside, so it shows up on the phone’s own map like any other tracker.

Design & Build

The case goes on in two parts. The back shell wraps the phone first, then the front frame with the screen protector presses down over the display and clicks into the shell all the way around. It takes some force to seat, and it takes more to pry apart again, which is what I want from something that’s supposed to survive a fall onto a parking lot.

The built-in screen protector is a thin clear panel in the front frame. There’s no separate protector to line up and apply with dust floating around the room, and the fingerprint sensor still works through it.

Around back, a raised lip surrounds the camera bar, and a ring sits in the middle of the case over the magnets. The ring pops out and swings down as a kickstand, and it also works as a finger loop when I’m holding the phone one-handed on the rare occasion someone calls me.

The bottom of the phone case has a hinged rubber flap over the USB-C port. The side buttons are covered by the case and press through it.

The Holster

The holster for the case is a hard plastic cradle with a spring clip on the back, and the cased phone easily snaps into it. It’s built for a job site or a day hiking the trail more than for an office, and with the case and holster together the phone gets wide enough to look like a pager from 1996.

The Trackable MagFlip Wallet

The wallet is a hard black shell about the size of a stack of credit cards, with SUPCASE stamped on the face. Cards go in at the top and slide out easily so I can grab the one I need.

On the back of the case the magnets hold firmly. SUPCASE rates them at 3,000 g, and the wallet stays put in a jacket pocket.

Its official compatibility list names the Pixel 10 and not the Pixel 9, because the Pixel 9 has no magnets of its own. Here it doesn’t matter, since the magnets are in the case. On a Pixel 9 in a plain case, the included adhesive ring does the same job.

The Stand

The wallet’s lid flips up and a metal leg folds out, so the wallet turns into a stand while it’s still stuck to the phone. It holds the phone upright or sideways, and the hinge holds a range of angles in between. On the desk it’s better than the ring kickstand, since it’s taller and steadier, and it’s ready for hands-free video calls when needed.

Tracking

Pairing took one button press. The wallet ships charged, and my Pixel offered to add it to Find Hub as soon as I pressed it. It showed up as “Find SUP,” a name the Find Hub app lets you change. From there it appears on the same map as my phone and my keys, and I can ring the buzzer when it has wandered into a couch cushion.

The wallet works with Find Hub or Find My, but only one phone at a time, so an iPhone and an Android can’t both track it. Find Hub can share it with other people, which is a feature I have no one to use with. SUPCASE says a 2-hour charge lasts about four to six months, so recharging is a twice-a-year chore.

Everyday Use

The case goes everywhere the phone does, and the phone has stopped picking up scuffs in the truck cupholder or on my workbench. It’s grippy in the hand without catching on pocket fabric.

With the wallet attached, the phone, the cards and the tracker all leave the apartment together. That’s a lot of weight in one pocket, and it’s thicker than I’d like for jeans, but in a jacket it’s fine. The magnets also make the case work with magnetic chargers and car mounts, which a Pixel 9 can’t use on its own.

What Could Be Better

The bulk adds up. The case alone is chunky, the wallet roughly doubles the thickness, and the holster adds more on top of that. It’s a lot of phone for a front jeans pocket.

The port flap has to be opened every time I plug in a cable. It keeps grit out at the campsite, but at home it’s one more thing to fiddle with at bedtime.

The wallet also has to come off before the phone goes on a wireless charger, since it sits right over the charging coil. The magnets make that quick, but it’s one more step every night.

On price, $41.99 is fair for a rugged two-piece case that comes with a holster and magnets. The wallet’s $74.99 is steeper, but it does include the tracking capability. The MagFlip makes the most sense if you want an expanded phone stand, a card wallet, and a tracker all-in-one.

Quick Questions

Q: Does the MagFlip Wallet work with a Pixel 9?
A: Yes, with the adhesive magnetic ring that comes in the box, but not on its own, because the Pixel 9 has no magnets. It also works on a Pixel 9 in a magnetic case like the Unicorn Beetle PRO Mag.

Q: Can I track the wallet from an iPhone and an Android phone?
A: Not at the same time. It pairs with either Apple Find My or Google Find Hub, one phone at a time.

Q: How long does the wallet’s battery last?
A: SUPCASE says a 2-hour charge lasts about four to six months, and up to 12 months on standby when it isn’t paired.

Q: Does the case need a separate screen protector?
A: No. The front frame has a screen protector built in.

Final Thoughts

The SUPCASE Unicorn Beetle PRO Mag is a tough, well-built case at a fair price, and the magnets and holster add real use to a Pixel 9. The Trackable MagFlip Wallet is clever, with a good stand and tracking that sits right in Find Hub, but it’s pricey and it adds a lot of thickness. Buy the case on its own merits, and add the wallet if you want your cards, a stand and a tracker in one piece stuck to your phone.
