REVIEW – A good insulated bottle is easy to find. One that also pays to keep plastic out of the ocean usually costs more and gives you a vague “sustainable” line on the box to show for it. The Ocean Bottle Original in the 34oz size puts a number on it. Each bottle funds the collection of 11.4 kg of plastic before it reaches the ocean, and an NFC chip in the base links the bottle to an app that tracks it.

Note: This Ocean Bottle was sent to me by Ocean Bottle at no cost. They had no editorial input and did not see this review before it published.

The Basics

The Original is a double-wall vacuum insulated steel bottle made from 65% recycled materials, including 90% recycled stainless steel. The 34oz size holds a full liter. Each bottle sold funds the collection of 11.4 kg (25 lb) of plastic before it reaches the ocean, about the weight of 1,000 plastic bottles. That plastic is collected on land near coasts and rivers through partner programs including Plastics for Change, Plastic Bank and rePurpose Global.

Design & Build

The Obsidian Black finish looks sharp out of the box, and the textured matte surface is great for grip. The lid is the best design choice here. You drink from the small spout, and the lower part of the lid unscrews for a wide mouth. That makes ice, refills and cleaning easy. The carry loop is soft silicone, so a full liter hanging off one finger doesn’t dig in, and it comes off if you’d rather go without it.

The App

Tapping a phone to the base brings up the bottle in Ocean Bottle’s app. It registers the bottle, counts refills if you tap it each time you fill up, and shows your impact. Mine credited 11.37 kg of collected plastic for owning the bottle, plus another 1.14 kg for registering in the app, for 12.5 kg total.

Tap a phone to the NFC mark on the base to pull up the bottle in the app.

It’s a cool little gimmick. I doubt I’ll scan it every time I fill up, but it’s a nice thing to be able to track.

Living With It

At 34oz this thing is big, closer to a small growler than a typical daily bottle, and you feel it once it’s full. That size is the point if you’re trying to hit a daily water goal without refilling five times.

What Could Be Better

The size that makes it useful also makes it heavy to carry when full. This isn’t a bottle you toss in a bag without noticing. The refill tracking only works if you tap your phone to the base every time.

A: Tap your phone to the base and the Ocean Bottle app registers the bottle, logs refills and shows your impact.

A: Yes. It’s removable soft silicone.

Q: How do you get ice in?
A: The lower part of the lid unscrews for a wide mouth.

Final Thoughts

The Ocean Bottle Original 34oz does the basic job of an insulated bottle well, and it backs the environmental pitch with a quantified number per bottle and named partners. At $48 it’s a few dollars more than a 32oz Hydro Flask Wide Mouth at $44.95, and it holds a little more. The impact costs you about three dollars.

Price: $48 direct, $48.99 on Amazon
Where to buy: Amazon or direct from Ocean Bottle
What I like: A quantified impact per bottle with named collection partners, wide-mouth lid for ice and cleaning, removable soft carry loop, the NFC app is a fun extra
What I don’t: Heavy to carry when full, refill tracking needs a tap every time
